ELLSWORTH — Lost: a purple pendant that holds the ashes of a beloved service dog.
Janine Stearns of Ellsworth had a busy day of errands on Saturday, Dec. 7, and lost the pendant somewhere in Ellsworth.
“It’s an inch and a half tall, heart shaped with a little silver filigree,” Stearns said. “The pendant is purple. Unless the top came loose, nobody would know what was in it.”
What’s in it are a portion of the remains of Stearns’ beloved “Bug,” her service dog of over 15 years.
“It was like losing a part of myself when I lost those ashes,” Stearns said. “We were together 24/7. Nobody was with me 24/7 except for him.”
The pendant also was attached to an orange key ring emblazoned with “Hell, Michigan” and a green four leaf clover — both plastic. Her late dog’s collar also was attached along with her house key and a lanyard with a British flag.
That day, Stearns went to the Maine Smoke Shop, the Dollar Tree and Walmart.
She’s called all those stores and so far, no one has turned in her belongings.
“I was shopping for groceries and a couple other things, so I was pretty much all over the store that day,” Stearns said of Walmart. “It was fastened to my purse and my dog’s collar was attached to it too. It’s bulky. That’s why I thought someone may have picked it up not realizing the importance of it.”
“I’m hoping somebody might have some compassion if they saw it,” she said. Stearns’ name and address are attached to the pendant so she’s hoping someone might drop it off in her mailbox.
