Winter season to begin with swim meet, basketball games

ELLSWORTH — After weeks of uncertainty, the first sporting events of the winter 2021 season are finally here.

The first competition of Hancock County’s delayed winter sports campaign is set to be held tomorrow, Jan. 15. That event, scheduled for 8 p.m., will pit the Ellsworth swim team against Brewer in a virtual competition.

The local basketball season will begin Monday, Jan. 18, when the Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ team hosts Bucksport at 5 p.m. Tuesday’s games pit the Ellsworth boys and girls against Hampden and the Deer Isle-Stonington boys against Bucksport, and Wednesday’s action will see the Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ team play on the road against Sumner.

Although teams in Hancock County have yet to commence play, other schools began Monday, the first day teams throughout the state were eligible to do so under Maine Principals’ Association and state guidelines. Monday’s slate of basketball games included contests between the Mattanawcook Academy and Lee Academy boys and girls, Cony and Mount Ararat boys and girls, Maranacook and Mount Abram boys and Easton and Fort Fairfield boys.

Athletic competitions can only be held in counties that have retained “green” designations in the Maine Department of Education’s color-code guidelines. Hancock County has remained green since color codes were first assigned in late July.
