Spring sports begin with baseball, softball throwing drills

BUCKSPORT — After 21 long months, spring sports have at last returned to Maine high schools.

The 2021 spring sports season began Monday as high school baseball and softball teams in Hancock County and elsewhere across the state commenced throwing drills. Those sessions with pitchers and catchers marked the first spring athletic activities since the 2019 season after last year’s campaign was canceled in its entirety.

Locally, Bucksport, Mount Desert Island and Sumner began throwing exercises Monday. Ellsworth is scheduled to begin activities tomorrow, March 24, after the School Board approved spring sports at Tuesday’s meeting.

Monday was the first day baseball and softball teams were eligible to begin throwing drills under Maine Principals’ Association guidelines. Other spring exercises and activities may begin as soon as Monday, March 29.

Barring any unexpected delays, the season will follow the arc of a standard spring sports season. Teams may hold their first countable games, meets or matches the week of April 19.
