ELLSWORTH — Hancock County had the privilege of hosting the Class B state wrestling championships this past winter, and local competitors took advantage.
Ellsworth and Bucksport crowned a total of three state champions at the tournament, which was held Feb. 18 at Bucksport High School. The event capped off successful seasons for both the Eagles and the Golden Bucks, both of whom were among the state’s most consistent teams throughout the year.
Ellsworth posted one of the day’s most impressive performances with a second-place finish. Peyton Cole (152 pounds) and Trent Goodman (170 pounds) won individual state championships for the Eagles.
Bucksport’s biggest triumph came when freshman David Gross defeated Erskine Academy’s Jakob Peavey in the final bout of the day to claim the heavyweight title, the school’s first in nearly 20 years. The Golden Bucks finished ninth out of 27 teams.
