MDI wrestlers prep for regionals

Jon Sargent won two out of four bouts for the Mount Desert Island High School wrestling team in the Penobscot Valley Conference held in Bucksport on Jan. 26.

BUCKSPORT — The Mount Desert Island High School wrestling team competed at the Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) wrestling tournament on Jan. 26.

Jon Sargent won two out of four matches in the 120-pound weight class.

One of those matches was against wrestler Sophia Carson from Penobscot Valley High School. His other win was against Raymond Maddocks from Ellsworth High School.

Sargent lost his other two matches to wrestlers Matthew Stewart and Jarrod Black from Bucksport High School and Foxcroft Academy.

Elijah Malloy won one of three matches in the 132-pound class against Rowan Stamp from Fort Kent Community High School. He lost to Devon Gudroe from Dexter High School and Gaige Pleninger from Foxcroft Academy.

Wilder Young won two out of four matches in the 138-pound weight class. He beat Joseph Mann of Bucksport High School and Ethan Cooley from Piscataquis Community High School. He lost to Forrest Law from Foxcroft Academy and Wyatt Tash from Mattanawcook Academy.

Elijah O’Conner won two of his four matches in the 145-pound weight class against Nicholas Levesque from Fort Kent and Jaime McAlpine from Ellsworth High School.

David Savage, Silas Van Dine, and Dylan Carroll all lost their bouts at the PVC. The wrestling team is scheduled to compete in the regional meet on Feb. 2. That could qualify some of them to face wrestlers across the state, with the top four wrestlers in each weight class moving forward.
