Takedowns Are Up For Trojan Grapplers

BANGOR — While still looking for their fourth win, the Mount Desert Island High School wrestlers are seeing marked improvement.

Up until the Christmas tournament in Howland, the Trojans had only 17 takedowns in 20 meets. At the two meets on Wednesday at John Bapst High School in Bangor, MDI amassed 20 takedowns against John Bapst and Hermon. Forfeits in two weight classes provided both opponents with the slim margin they needed to capture the wins. John Bapst won 33-30 and Hermon won 36-30.

“It was a good night but we still didn’t have everybody there. We are giving away a lot of weight classes,” said Trojans head coach Chip Dugans. “We have people that are not eligible at this time. Lucas Murphy wasn’t feeling well.”

On the upside some wrestlers are returning to the fold and are bringing a spark of inspiration to the team.

“John Gaspie came back. He took some time off for his studies, came back, and didn’t skip a beat,” Coach Dugans said. “He didn’t look like he had ever missed a practice when he went up there.”
