BELFAST — Hancock County will be well-represented next weekend when Maine’s top high school wrestlers battle for state championships.

Nine Hancock County wrestlers qualified for states with top-four finishes in Saturday’s Northern Maine championships at Belfast Area High School. That contingent will include five wrestlers from Bucksport and four from Ellsworth after both teams had solid showings in the meet.

For Bucksport, Grayson Fernald brought home Hancock County’s lone regional title on the afternoon as he claimed first place at 285 pounds. The junior, who had defeated Dexter’s Gage Sinclair for the heavyweight crown a week earlier in the Penobscot Valley Conference championships, topped Sinclair again for the Class B North crown.

Jaxon Gross also reached the championship final for Bucksport as he took home second place for the Golden Bucks at 220 pounds. Also qualifying for states for Bucksport were Joe Bowen (third place, 195 pounds), Kaleb Nightingale (fourth place, 138 pounds) and Kayden Foster (fourth, 170).

For Ellsworth, Luke McKenney placed third at 170 pounds as he won the consolation bracket in that weight class. Luke Horne (120 pounds), Grayson Mote (138 pounds) and Ridge Weatherbee (152) also qualified for the Eagles as they notched fourth-place finishes.

The nine qualified wrestlers will compete in the Class B championships at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Morse High School in Bath.
