Local wrestling teams begin regular seasons

BUCKSPORT — The wrestling regular season began Saturday with Bucksport hosting its own tournament and Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island competing in Belfast.

Bucksport hosted schools from across the state in this year’s Ryan Detour Memorial Tournament. It marked the first time the tournament, which has been held in Detour’s honor every year since his 2002 death during a match in Caribou, has been a regular season event. The Golden Bucks took fourth place behind Dexter, Foxcroft and Mattanawcook.

Individually, Bucksport had seven wrestlers place in their respective weight classes. Jacob Ames claimed first place in the 220-pound weight class, Travis Hutchinson (120 pounds) and Ricky Perkins (160) placed second, Alex Burbank (113) and Hunter Robichaud (170) placed third and Devin Maheu (152) and Skylar MacNair (182) claimed fourth.

Ellsworth and MDI traveled to Belfast for a dual meet. The Eagles and Trojans competed against Belfast, Medomak Valley and Oceanside.

Landon St. Peter (126 pounds), Logan Lord (145), Jeremy Foskett (152) and Noah Hughes (160) earned individual match wins for Ellsworth, and Bangor Christian’s Oakley Dugans, who competes as a member of the Eagles, was also a winner. Cole Allen (160) and Sam Hoff (285) earned wins for MDI.

Ellsworth and Bucksport will be competing at Foxcroft and Mountain Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, and 9:30 a.m. next Saturday, Dec. 15, respectively. MDI is scheduled to compete at Mattanawcook Academy at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, and will compete at another meet at Penobscot Valley High School at 10 a.m. next Saturday.
