ELLSWORTH — Hancock County wrestling teams enjoyed solid days at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships Saturday with two local wrestlers winning their respective weight classes and all three teams finishing in the top half of the field.
Bucksport’s David Gross won the 285-pound weight class with a 10-2 decision against Penobscot Valley’s Joe Tuulima in the championship bout. That title win followed an 18-second pin in the quarterfinals and a 55-second pin in the semifinals.
Overall, the Golden Bucks placed third of 15 teams behind Foxcroft and Dexter. Alex Burbank (106 pounds) and Kaleb Nightingale (113 pounds) earned runner-up finishes, and Travis Hutchinson (120), Ricky Perkins (152) and Jacob Coghill (220) won their respective consolation brackets.
For Ellsworth, senior Logan Lord pinned Jacob Nadeau of Piscataquis to claim the 145-pound title. That result came after a semifinal bout in which Lord defeated Caribou’s Angel Riopelle with a 19-4 tech fall.
Charlie Hughes took second finish at 182 pounds class for Ellsworth, which placed sixth. Nick Taylor won the consolation bracket for Ellsworth at 170, and Matt Reid (120) and Jeremy Foskett (152) claimed fourth-place finishes.
Mount Desert Island brought just three wrestlers to the tournament, but all of those wrestlers placed. Ethan Harkins (182 pounds) and Sam Hoff (285) claimed consolation wins, and Baylor Landsman placed fourth at 160 for the seventh-place Trojans.
All three teams will be competing in the Class B North championships, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, at Ellsworth High School. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
