ELLSWORTH — Ellsworth Eagle junior Mike Garland notched two wins before being eliminated at the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships last weekend in Providence, R.I.

Garland, who wrestled in the 220-pound weight class, is the first Ellsworth wrestler ever to win at the tournament, according to Eagle coach Dan Ormsby.

On Friday’s opening day of the event, held at the Providence Career and Technology Center, Garland got off to a strong start against Alex Kane of Wakefield, Mass., and won with a pin in the second period.

That evening, Garland scored his second win, facing off against Rhode Island state champion Nikolis Zieus.
