BURNS PHOTO Ellsworth’s St. Peter wins state title at Class B wrestling championships February 17, 2018 on Sports, Wrestling ELLSWORTH — Ellsworth freshman Landon St. Peter won an individual state title in the 106-pound weight class with at Saturday’s Class B wrestling championships in Wells. St. Peter began the day with a win over Monmouth Academy’s Leo Wilson in the quarterfinals before recording an overtime victory over Vinny DeRoche of Mountain Valley. In the title bout, St. Peter beat Bucksport’s Travis Hutchinson 12-9 in a duel that featured two of Hancock County’s most consistent wrestlers all season. Charlie Hughes won the consolation championship at 182 pounds by pinning Medomak Valley’s Elijah Lash 2 minutes, 44 seconds into the match. Chris Barnes claimed fourth place at 195 pounds after an injury forced him to default in the consolation title match. Another top performer from Hancock County was Bucksport’s Foster Ashmore, who finished second in the 120-pound weight class. Ashmore lost a closely fought battle with Dexter’s Caleb Weeks by a score of 16-14 in the championship bout. Ellsworth finished eighth of 24 schools as a team with 45 points, and Bucksport finished 10th with 36. Those finishes were encouraging results for both teams, which have been missing a number of key wrestlers all season. Wells scored 121 points to secure first place and win its second state championship in a row. Foxcroft finished second, Mount View finished third and Medomak Valley and Dexter tied for fourth.
