CARIBOU — Ellsworth wrestling’s Matt Reid claimed an individual regional title Saturday afternoon as he claimed first place in the 126-pound class in the Class B North championships at Caribou High School.
Reid, who took second one week earlier in the Penobscot Valley Conference championships in Bar Harbor, topped Dexter’s Zac Spizuoco via decision in the quarterfinals. He then pinned PVC champion Rico Ayala of Foxcroft in the semifinals to reach the title bout.
In the regional title bout, Reid, the No. 4 seed in his weight class, took on Mattanawcook Academy’s Kaleb Toby. The Ellsworth junior won via pin yet again to claim the 126-pound crown and head to the upcoming state meet as a Northern Maine champion.
Hancock County also had four runner-up finishers as Bucksport’s Kaleb Nightingale (113 pounds) and Gavin Billings (285 pounds), Ellsworth’s Noah Hughes (160 pounds) and Mount Desert Island’s Baylor Landsman (170) took second in their respective weight classes. The Golden Bucks’ Grayson Fernald (195) and Cameron Rich (220) won consolation titles to advance to the state championships.
Bucksport took fifth place in the team competition with 64.5 points with Ellsworth taking seventh with 53 points and MDI claiming 12th with 25 points. Belfast racked up 174.5 points to claim the title.
Qualified wrestlers will make the long trip to Fryeburg Academy for the Class B championships Saturday, Feb. 15. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
