ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth wrestling team placed sixth of 21 teams at the Noble Invitational tournament last Tuesday in North Berwick.
“Although there were no individual champions, the team had a strong performance across the board,” Ellsworth coach JF Burns said. “I was very happy with the results.”
Skowhegan won with 180.5 points; Noble took second with 170; Foxcroft, third with 162; Marshwood, fourth with 154; and Nokomis, fifth with 124.0. Ellsworth followed with 119.5 points.
Though injuries prevented two of Ellsworth’s state champions — Dagan Berenyi and Connor Petros — from competing, the team notched two individual third-place finishes.
In the 145-pound weight bracket, Peyton Cole lost to eventual champion Aiden Whitis of Marshwood by a score of 4-3 in the semifinals. Cole went on to beat Bryce Bernadine of Mount Mansfield Union in Vermont in the consolation finals by major decision by a score of 9-0.
At 160 pounds, Trent Goodman also lost in the semifinals, 6-3 to the Rhode Island state champion, Christopher Francis. In the consolation finals, Goodman beat Austin Pelletier of Messalonskee by technical fall 15-0.
Ellsworth’s Logan Lord (126 pounds) and Wally Moon (220 pounds) both took fourth.
Despite only weighing 158 pounds, Austin Smith placed fifth in the 170-pound championship.
Noah Robidoux (132 pounds), Josh Wright (145 pounds) and Andrew Brown (152 pounds) all placed sixth.
