ELLSWORTH — Despite injuries, the Ellsworth wrestling team took second at Saturday’s Holiday Tournament at Penobscot Valley High School.
“The team had a good day, and many of the backup wrestlers also had an opportunity to compete,” Ellsworth coach JF Burns said. “This tournament is basically a precursor to the PVC tournament in January.”
With four injured wrestlers unable to compete, Ellsworth finished second of 17 teams with 129.0 points. Foxcroft won with 194.5; Dexter took third with 120 points; PVHS, fourth with 79; and Bucksport finished fifth with 70.
Three Ellsworth wrestlers won their weight classes: Logan Lord, Austin Smith and Trent Goodman.
Lord, a freshman, beat Antonio Ayala of Foxcroft 9-2 in the 126-pound final.
At 160 pounds, Burns said Smith “again proved what years of hard practice and dedication are worth” when he beat Bryce Sweet of Dexter 3-1 in the championship.
For the 170-pound championship, Goodman beat previously undefeated Jacob Hesseltine of Dexter 15-0.
Bucksport also had two champions: Foster Ashmore and Brody Boynton.
Ashmore pinned Brandon Weston of Foxcroft for the 113-pound title. For the 152-pound championship, Boynton pinned Noah Larrabee of Mattanawcook.
Bucksport’s Devin Darveau took second after losing to PJ Crawford of PVHS in the 120-pound final.
For Ellsworth, Noah Robidoux and Josh Wright both placed second.
Robidoux lost 6-4 to Tyler Beem of Dexter in the 138-pound final, and Josh Wright lost by fall to Zach Caron of Foxcroft in the 145-pound championship.
Peyton Cole also lost to Caron in the semifinals and finished third, pinning Isaiah Hesseltine of Dexter in the consolation finals.
At 220 pounds, Wally Moon, a new wrestler for Ellsworth, pinned Izaiah Thayer of Caribou in the consolation finals to place third.
Burns said backup Landan Scott showed the depth of Ellsworth’s squad by placing fourth at 126 pounds.
Two other Ellsworth wrestlers who also placed fourth were Amber St. Peter at 120 pounds and Andrew Brown at 152 pounds.
As for Ellsworth’s independent wrestlers, Oakley Dugans of Bangor Christian took second at 106 pounds. Jared Smith of John Bapst placed second at 195 pounds, losing to Brandon Brock of Foxcroft by pin.
Ellsworth awaits the recovery and return of the injured Connor Petros, Dagan Berenyi, Tyler Hardwick and Devin Wright.
Ellsworth was scheduled to compete next on Wednesday at Washington Academy.
