Ellsworth Eagles Finish Fourth In EM Class B Wrestling Tourney



PITTSFIELD — The Ellsworth Eagles placed fourth among 13 teams in Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class B Wrestling Championship at Maine Central Institute.

PITTSFIELD — The Ellsworth Eagles placed fourth among 13 teams in Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class B Wrestling Championship at Maine Central Institute.

Though Ellsworth came home with no titles, two Eagle wrestlers were runners-up four more placed third and another finished fourth.

The Eagles also had the biggest crowd of fans at the meet, according to one observer.

In the championship finals, Brandon Goncalves lost a 3-0 decision to Jordan Young of Belfast at 112 pounds, and Jared Sargent came up short in a 6-2 decision won by Lee Larry of Old Town at 215 pounds.

In the consolation finals for the Eagles:

Ben Wildes won a tight 5-4 decision over Taylor Olsen of Medomak Valley at 140 pounds.

Dakota Jewett scored a 9-5 decision over Neal Harrison of Camden Hills at 145 pounds.

Michael Philippon eked out an 11-9 decision over Anthony Batty of Camden Hills at 171 pounds.

Patrick Kidder scored a 9-3 decision over Peter Kelley of Belfast at 189 pounds.

Brian Jipson of Old Town pinned Nate Tracy in 23 seconds at 285 pounds.

Those Ellsworth wrestlers all qualified for state championship competition, and Dakota Hellum, who lost a tough 9-7 semifinal bout to eventual champion R.J. Muir of Camden Hills at 152 pounds, will go as an alternate.

Sumner’s Ryan Grover also turned in a third place finish, pinning Justin Philbrook of Belfast in 4:38 in the consolation final at 152 pounds.
