EHS Wrestlers Win Four Matches in Meet at MDI



BAR HARBOR — Ellsworth Eagle wrestlers continued their winning ways on Wednesday, Dec. 16, with victories over all four opponents at a five-team meet at Mount Desert Island High School.

BAR HARBOR — Ellsworth Eagle wrestlers continued their winning ways on Wednesday, Dec. 16, with victories over all four opponents at a five-team meet at Mount Desert Island High School.

Ellsworth downed the George Stevens Academy Eagles 46-28, getting wins on the mat by four wrestlers.

For the Eagles, James Goncalves (119 pounds) pinned Dominik Kiefer, Paul Hewes (145) pinned Joshua Bowden, Dakota Hellum (160) pinned Jeff Durand and Josh Fowler (189) won a major decision over Thomas Strehan.

For GSA, Jordan Lord (112) pinned Gina Soutthivong, Storme Macomber (125) won a technical fall over Zack Harris and Josia Moore (140) scored a technical fall over Ben Wildes.

Ellsworth also had four forfeit wins and GSA picked up two.

In a 54-24 win over the host MDI Trojans, Wildes (140) pinned Chelsea Johnson, Hellum (160) pinned Elias Burne, Michael Philippon (171) pinned William Shepard, Fowler (189) pinned Ramil Mammadhasauli, Sargent (215) pinned Justin Bully and Patrick Kidder (285) pinned Colton Strout.

For the Trojans, Josh Silva (119) pinned Harris in the only other head-to-head competition.

In head-to-head match-ups for the Eagles in a 48-21 win over the John Bapst Crusaders, James Goncalves (112 pounds), Paul Hewes (145) and Jared Sargent (215) pinned their opponents, while Ben Wildes (140) lost by decision and Dakota Jewett (152) was pinned.

For the Eagles, in a 60-18 win over the Old Town Coyotes, Wildes, Hewes, Hellum, Philippon, Sargent and Kidder all pinned their opponents while Chance Curtis (189) lost by a pin.

The GSA Eagles scored a close 40-36 win over the Trojans.

Winners for GSA in head-to-head match-ups were Alex Turanski (103) by major decision over Jonathan Sargent, Dominik Kiefer (119) by pin over Josh Silva, Jamie Moore (135) by pin over Justin Lipkvich and Josia Moore (140) by pin over Chelsea Johnson.

Winners for MDI included Elias Burne (160) by pin over Jeff Durand and Ramil Mammadhasauli (189) by pin over Thomas Strehan.

GSA and Old Town each had three wins in head-to-head match-ups but the Eagles fell to Old Town 42-36, giving up four wins by forfeit.

For GSA, Macomber, Josia Moore and Joshua Bowden won their bouts by pins, while Jamie Moore, Durand and Strehan lost by pins.

Justin Bally pinned his opponent for the only on-the-mat win for MDI’s Trojans in a 42-36 loss to the John Bapst Crusaders.

In MDI’s 48-24 loss to Old Town, Lipkvich (135) and Shepard (171) both pinned their opponents.

Sumner’s Ryan Grover (152) also remained unbeaten, continuing his string of wins with pins over Dean Donovan of Ellsworth and Albert Lear of John Bapst, in addition to three forfeit wins.
