BUCKSPORT — Competing at full strength, the Bucksport High School wrestling team took first place Saturday at a wrestling tournament in Calais.
The Golden Bucks brought a total of 16 wrestlers to the tournament and sent seven of them to championship bouts. Junior David Gross, who was competing in official matches for the first time in more than a year after recovering from an injury, marked his return in style by claiming first place in the heavyweight division.
Alex Burbank (113 pounds), Travis Hutchinson (120 pounds), Kaleb Nightingale (126), Ricky Perkins (160), Hunter Robichaud (170) and Gavin Billings (220) placed second in their respective weight classes. Elsewhere, Skylar MacNair took third at 182 pounds, and Jacob Coghill placed fourth at 220.
Bucksport’s next competition will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Ellsworth High School. The Golden Bucks and Eagles will be traveling to Skowhegan High School to compete in another event at 9 a.m. next Saturday, Jan. 12, with the latter also scheduled to compete at Piscataquis Community School in Guilford at 6 p.m. Jan. 16.
