BUCKSPORT — The Bucksport Middle School wrestling team was crowned regional champion Saturday with a first-place finish at the Pine Tree Wrestling League’s Eastern Maine championships at Bucksport High School.
Bucksport produced three individual champions with Cameron Rich (145 pounds), Jaxon Gross (195 pounds) and Jacob Coghill (240 pounds) all earning individual wins. Kaleb Nightingale (117 pounds), Tyler Hallett (130 pounds) and Grayson Fernald (170 pounds) also made title bout appearances for the Golden Bucks.
Connor Fitch (93 pounds), Alyssa Maguire (137 pounds) and Bea Bernier (155 pounds) also starred for Bucksport with consolation bracket wins. Abby Hanscom made an appearance in the 123-pound consolation title bout.
Bucksport’s winning total was 166 points, which was more than enough to top second-place finishers Troy Howard Middle School and Mattanawcook Junior High School at 141.5 each. Oceanside and Camden-Rockport rounded out the rest of the top five.
Other local schools competing were Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School and Dedham Middle School. Ellsworth’s Luke Horne (81 pounds) and Chase Hardwick (130 pounds) won consolation titles to help the team to a ninth-place finish, and Dedham’s Paige Anderson, who added a third-place finish at 175, helped her school finish in 11th place.
The league championships, which will draw teams from both regions, will be held next Saturday, March 31, in Skowhegan. The event is set for 9:30 a.m.
