BAR HARBOR — High school wrestling fans may not be the most numerous sports enthusiasts, but they proved to be the loudest this week during a meet at Mount Desert Island High School on Jan. 5.
The raucous cheering reached its pinnacle during a final bout in the 182-pound class between MDI wrestler Tom Bulley and Jake Poors from Ellsworth High School.
After nearly four hours of bouts, rival fans left the bleachers to surround the perimeter of the mat, making up for the absence of a halftime band by stomping on the gym floor and shouting at the wrestlers as they thrashed late into the third round.
Bulley pinned Poors with seconds remaining in the bout after slowly wearing down his opponent. He won his weight class in the second consecutive tournament this season.
MDI wrestler Jon Sargent easily won the 121-pound weight class that day, beating out two opponents in regular bouts as well as winning an exhibition bout tacked on at the end of the meet.
Matt Curtis broke even with one win and one loss. Elijah Malloy, one of the team’s more aggressive competitors, racked up one win and two losses. Wilder Young won one bout and lost two others. Teryn Miller also went away with one win and two losses, as did David Savage. Silas Van Dan lost both his bouts.
Both Miller and Savage had their first wins of the season.
Other wrestlers converged on the MDI facilities from Fort Kent Community High School, Calais High School, Woodland High School, Lee Academy, Stearns High School, Penobscot Valley High School, and Maranacook Community High School.
The Trojan wrestlers were next scheduled to compete at home on Jan. 12 against Fort Kent High School, Lee Academy and five other teams.
