Volleyball Sees Spike

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Volleyball Club hosted a fund-raising tournament at the Mount Desert Island YMCA on Monday. Team College of the Atlantic ended up atop the heap as it battled through the brackets to take the Mermaid Trophy.

The five teams in attendance were Team College of the Atlantic, Fab Six, Gratuitous Sets and Violence, Team Roper and the Washington County Reunion Tour.

The day began with every co-ed team playing two games to 21 points. Each team was guaranteed an opportunity to play eight games during the day.

Semifinals action had Reunion Tour trying to take down Team COA only to find themselves down 21-15 and 21-18, pushing Team COA into the finals with Team Roper from Brewer. They split two games to 21 but Team COA delivered the crushing blow when Ryan Buckley drilled the final point home to win 15-13 in the final tiebreaker.

Abby Morgan was player of the day for her consistent setting and athleticism. Taj Schottland was the defensive and passing player of the day.

Mike Kelley and the Brewer volleyball team later presented the coveted Mermaid Trophy at Geddy’s.

The tournament also provided an opportunity to raise awareness about volleyball in the region. Interested parties can join volleyball each Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the MDI YMCA on Park Street in Bar Harbor.
