ELLSWORTH — With the scheduled slate of games completed, the final chapter of the 2021 winter/spring volleyball season is set to begin.
Hancock County teams concluded their 2021 spring/winter regular seasons earlier this week. Those teams will now turn their attentions to postseason competition as they battle to bring home Penobscot Valley Conference pod championships.
On Thursday, Ellsworth concluded the regular season with a 3-0 Senior Night victory over Sumner at Ellsworth High School. The Eagles claimed set wins of 25-5, 25-15 and 25-17 to conclude the regular season with a record of 5-5 and complete a season sweep of the Tigers.
In Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island suffered back-to-back home defeats last week with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14) loss Friday night against Brewer and a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15) defeat Saturday against Narraguagus. The Trojans finished the regular season with an overall record of 5-4 after the cancellation of Tuesday’s road match against Sumner.
Sumner finished the regular season 1-5 following the cancellation of the MDI match and Tuesday’s road match against Jonesport-Beals. Elsewhere in the Hancock County Class C ranks, George Stevens Academy and Bucksport finished their regular seasons with records of 8-0 and 0-10, respectively.
Ellsworth and MDI will compete in the PVC Class B pod tournament, which is set to begin with play-in games to be played Thursday, April 8. The fifth-ranked Eagles will play on the road against fourth-ranked Hampden Academy (5-4), and the No. 3 Trojans will host No. 6 Nokomis (4-5). Both of those matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
With wins in their respective play-in matches, Ellsworth and MDI would advance to pod semifinal matches to be played Thursday, April 9. The Eagles would play on the road against top-ranked Washington Academy at 6 p.m., and MDI would take on second-ranked Brewer at 6:30 at Brewer High School.
The PVC Class C pod tournament will begin Thursday as ninth-ranked Bucksport plays on the road against No. 8 Jonesport-Beals (0-8) in the prelims. The winner of that game will advance to face No. 1 GSA in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup in Blue Hill. In Hancock County’s other quarterfinal contest, sixth-ranked Sumner will play on the road against either Woodland (7-2) or Narraguagus (9-1).
Tournament play will continue Saturday, April 10, with the PVC Class B title match (6 p.m.) and both Class C semifinal matches. The Class C championship match will be held Monday, April 12.
