ELLSWORTH — The volleyball regular season is over, and the postseason is set to begin this weekend.
Hancock County’s five volleyball teams are set to participate in the upcoming playoffs. Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island will compete in the Class B field, and Bucksport, George Stevens Academy and Sumner will take part in Class C.
Ellsworth and MDI closed out their respective regular season campaigns against one another Tuesday at Ellsworth High School. The Trojans (8-6) claimed a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15) win over the Eagles (6-8) to complete a season sweep of the rivalry.
Both fifth-ranked MDI and eighth-ranked Ellsworth are scheduled to host playoff matches at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. The Trojans will take on No. 12 Nokomis (4-10), and the Eagles will battle ninth-ranked Cony (6-8).
In Class C, George Stevens Academy concluded the regular season 11-2 after falling 3-1 (28-30, 13-25, 25-23, 10-25) against top-ranked Washington Academy (13-0) in Tuesday’s regular season finale in East Machias. The result locked GSA into the No. 2 seed in the statewide Class C field.
GSA will open the playoffs with a Hancock County battle against seventh-ranked Bucksport (6-7) at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, in Blue Hill. The Eagles won both regular season matchups with the Golden Bucks, who closed out the regular season Tuesday with a three-set victory over visiting Lee Academy (2-12).
Ninth-ranked Sumner (3-11) is set to play on the road against Lee Academy (2-12) in a Class C play-in match at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner will advance face No. 1 Washington Academy in a state quarterfinal match in East Machias.
