BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island and Ellsworth volleyball teams competed in the pod playoffs this week with the Trojans claiming opening-round win and the Eagles falling to a narrow defeat in their play-in contest.
On Thursday, third-ranked MDI claimed a four-set win over No. 6 Nokomis (4-6) in a Penobscot Valley Conference Class B play-in round contest in Bar Harbor. The Trojans dropped the opening set 25-23 but won the remaining games by scores of 25-13, 25-23 and 25-12 to advance to the semifinals.
On Friday, MDI hit the road to take on Brewer in the semifinals. The Trojans (6-5) claimed a 25-13 victory in the first set, but the No. 2 Witches won 25-19 in the second set, 25-18 in the third and 25-13 in the fourth to book a place in the title match.
In other PVC Class B action, fifth-ranked Ellsworth fell to No. 4 Hampden Academy in Thursday’s play-in match in Hampden. The Eagles (5-6) bounced back from 29-27 and 28-26 defeats in the first two sets with 25-20 and 25-21 wins in the third and fourth, respectively, before Hampden won the tiebreaking fifth set 15-10 to claim the win.
Ella Hubbard had five kills, 12 assists and 21 digs for Ellsworth, which also got five aces, 12 kills and 15 digs from Alli Dorr. Other contributors for the Eagles included Jocelyn Boudreau (three aces, three kills and 16 digs), Rachel Endre (six aces, six kills, seven digs) and Jocelyn Jordan (five aces, three kills, five assists and two blocks).
Hampden (6-5) would later fall to top-ranked Washington Academy in straight sets in Friday’s semifinal match. Washington Academy (12-0) then claimed the PVC Class B title with a three-set victory over Brewer (10-2) in Saturday’s championship match in East Machias.
