BAR HARBOR — An unusual high school volleyball season in Hancock County is off to a thrilling start.
Mount Desert Island beat Ellsworth in five sets Tuesday in the first match of the 2021 winter/spring season. The Trojans and Eagles went blow for blow with MDI claiming a 25-21, 14-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-10 win in the rivalry showdown in Bar Harbor.
Victoria Del Cid led the way for MDI (1-0) with four aces, one kill, 17 assists and two digs. The Trojans also got one ace, eight kills and six digs from Leah Carroll, six kills and four digs from Molly Ritter and six aces and one kill from Emma Stanley.
For Ellsworth (0-1), Jocelyn Jordan had eight aces, eight kills and six solo blocks, and Ella Hubbard had four aces, five kills and 11 assists. The Eagles also received two aces and six kills from Alli Dorr, six aces and three kills from Rachel Endre, two aces, one kill and 11 digs from Jocelyn Boudreau and 10 assists from Bailey Clarke.
Volleyball teams in Maine are eligible to play 10-match winter/spring seasons after the sport was unable to be played indoors in the fall. Teams must play their final regular season matches by April 9 and postseason play (should postseason competitions be offered this year) by April 16.
Ellsworth will play on the road against George Stevens Academy at 5:30 p.m. today, March 10, before hosting Brewer at 6 p.m. Friday, March 12, and Bucksport at that time Monday, March 15. MDI will host Sumner at 5:30 p.m. today and Narraguagus at that time Monday.
