WATERVILLE — The Lady Mariners traveled to Waterville to compete in the Colby Invitational tournament on September 11th and 12th. They took on the Colby Mules, the UMaine Farmington Beavers, and the UMaine Presque Isle Owls, coming away with a 2-1 record for the weekend.
In the first match against Colby, the Lady Mariners lost 3-1 (25-22, 26-28, 18-25, and 17-25). The Lady Mariners took the first game of the match and then had the serve to win game two but failed to close it out and eventually fell in four games to the Mules. Leading the way for MMA was Chelsea Ward (Homer, AK) with 20 kills, 5 digs, and 3 blocks. Freshman setter Jenn Dixon (Woodstock, MD) added 25 assists and 9 digs, while sophomore libero Lauren Sakahara (Bellevue, WA) added a season high 31 digs in the match.
In the second match on Saturday morning the Lady Mariners beat UMaine Farmington by the score of 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14). The Lady Mariners were led by Chelsea Ward and Amy Young (Cumberland) who had 13 and 10 kills respectively. Jenn Dixon played well in the match collecting 28 assists and 3 kills while Sakahara tallied 10 digs.
In the third match against UMaine Presque Isle, the Lady Mariners fought off a scrappy Owls team to win three straight (28-26, 25-22, 25-21). Chelsea Ward once again led the way against the Owls with 21 kills and 4 digs. Jenn Dixon had 29 assists, 7 digs and 3 kills, while Amy Young continued her outstanding weekend collecting 10 kills and 7 digs. Lauren Sakahara collected a team high 27 digs while Kayley Rodriguez (Quincy, IL) collected 20 digs.
For her efforts, Chelsea Ward was named to the All-Tournament team. Next up for the Lady Mariners is a non conference match against Unity College on Wednesday.
