ELLSWORTH — The high school volleyball regular season concluded Tuesday evening, and Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island and George Stevens Academy are set to participate in this year’s state playoffs.
Ellsworth, which started the season 1-9, won three of its final four matches to finish 4-10. Wins last Wednesday over Westbrook, Friday over Nokomis and Monday over Cony lifted the Eagles to the No. 10 spot in the final Class B standings and gave the team a berth in the preliminary round.
Ellsworth will play on the road against No. 7 Brewer (7-7) at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 24. The Eagles would advance to take on No. 2 Washington Academy (11-3) with a win.
Elsewhere in the Class B ranks, MDI earned a bye to the quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed. The Trojans (8-6) will play on the road against third-ranked Cape Elizabeth (10-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
In Class C, George Stevens Academy (12-2) will host a playoff game for the first time in program history when it takes on No. 7 Machias (7-7) at 4 p.m. Saturday. A win would send the second-ranked Eagles to the state semifinals, where they would face No. 3 Calais (10-4) or No. 6 North Yarmouth (8-6).
Eighth-ranked Bucksport (6-8) fell one spot short of the last Class C playoff berth. Ninth-ranked Sumner finished the year 2-12.
