ELLSWORTH — Mixing powerful serves and gentle point-scoring tips of the ball into the no-man’s land between Ellsworth’s defensive lines, the Greely Rangers rolled to a 3-0 win over the Eagles in a state Class A volleyball quarterfinal on Saturday.
The Rangers came to Ellsworth ranked fifth in the Maine Principals’ Association standings with a record of 10-4.
Greely swept the three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-18, advancing toWednesday’s semifinal against top-seeded and undefeated Scarborough.
On paper, Ellsworth was the slight favorite with a record of 12-2 and fourth place in the standings.
But the overall strength of teams from the southern part of Maine was very much on display both in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor, where the third-ranked Mount Desert Island Trojans also fell 3-1 to sixth-ranked Cape Elizabeth in quarterfinal play on Saturday.
Ellsworth coach Mike Kelley explained after Saturday’s match that, even though the Eagles are in the Class A division, eight of the 14 games are played against Class B teams.
