Local athletes compete in season’s 2nd, 3rd indoor track meets

ORONO — December came to a close with Hancock County athletes lighting it up at the University of Maine.

Local runners, jumpers and throwers took part in the season’s second and third indoor track meets Dec. 23 and 30 at UMaine’s New Balance Field House. Hancock County accounted for 17 victories in the month’s penultimate meet before closing out 2021 with 10 victories in Thursday’s event.

Sumner marked the Dec. 23 morning meet with five event wins, the first of which came courtesy of Jarod Smith in the 55-meter hurdles (9.59 seconds). The Tigers also got wins from Ren Salisbury (boys’ 1-mile run, 5:11.11), Kaleb Colson (400-meter dash, 56.95 seconds), Jack Fisher (60-yard hurdles, 11.79 seconds) and Ada Fisher (girls’ 500-meter dash, 1:06.53).

The Ellsworth girls got wins from Addison Nelson (2:45.38) and Tori Watkins (5 feet) in the Dec. 23 morning 800-meter run and high jump, respectively. For Mount Desert Island, Miles Burr ran the 200-meter dash in 23.89 seconds to place first in the 20-runner boys’ field.

In the afternoon, Bucksport’s William Hileman won the 800-meter and 2-mile runs in 2:15.31 and 10:36.94, respectively. Hugh Jack (boys’ 55-meter dash, 7.01), Colin Simpson (boys’ long jump, 20-04 1/2), Nathan Paulauskas (boys’ high jump, 6-4), Johanna Stiles (girls’ 200-meter dash, 29.42) and Natasha Monreal (girls’ long jump, 15-1 1/2) added one win each for the Bucks.

For George Stevens Academy, Kathleen Stephens highlighted the Dec. 23 afternoon meet with one victory on the track and one in the field. Stephens won the 400-meter dash in 1:09.37 before later clearing 4-8 to take first place in the high jump.

In Thursday’s morning meet, Jack and Simpson recorded victories for Bucksport. Jack ran the 200-meter dash in 25.51 seconds to finish first in the 26-runner field, and Simpson recorded a distance of 20-1 1/4 to place first of 17 contestants in the long jump.

GSA’s Ira Buchholz, Micah Bryan, Emery Leach and Charlie Parker began Thursday’s afternoon meet with a first-place finish in the boys’ 4-by-800 relay (11:03.97). Thea Crowley won the 800-meter run in 2:33.11 and the 1-mile run in 5:35.46, and Stephens won the 400-meter dash for the second week in a row with a time of 1:06.83.

For MDI, Burr won the boys’ 400-meter dash in 54.23 seconds before crossing the finish line in 24.40 seconds to win the 200-meter dash. Eli Daigle gave the Trojans a victory in the boys’ 55-meter hurdles as he posted a time of 10.58 seconds.

The Bucksport boys and girls finished as runners-up to Brewer in the Dec. 23 afternoon meet with scores of 104 points and 66 points, respectively. The Ellsworth boys (64 points) and GSA girls (58 points) finished second to Bangor in the afternoon session Thursday.

Local athletes will return to UMaine on Saturday, Jan. 8. Bucksport, GSA and Sumner will participate in the morning session at 9, and Ellsworth and MDI will take part in the afternoon session at 1:30.
