BAR HARBOR — Outdoor track’s championship season began Saturday afternoon as local runners competed in the Hancock County championships at Mount Desert Island High School.
With Ellsworth and MDI vying for first place in both competitions, the meet came down to the last few events. MDI edged Ellsworth for wins with George Stevens Academy, Bucksport and Sumner placing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in both events.
On the boys’ side, MDI’s Elijah Joyce won three events with first-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and javelin throw. MDI’s Gilbert Isaacs (discus throw and shot put), Bucks-port’s Carter Tolmasoff (100- and 200-meter dashes) and Ellsworth’s Matt Shea (1,600- and 3,200-meter runs) also won multiple events
Loren Genrich (long jump and triple jump), Marilyn Sawyer (100- and 200-meter dashes) and Zoe Olson (800- and 1,600-meter runs) won multiple events for the MDI girls. Addie Morrison of Bucksport (400-meter dash), Autumn Paul and Paige Sawyer of Ellsworth (discus throw and 100-meter hurdles, respectively), and GSA’s 4-by-100 team of Elia O’Hara, Susanna Jakub, Ivy Manner-Wheelden and Grace Broughton were among other event winners.
Bucksport, GSA and Sumner will compete in the Penobscot Valley Conference Small-School championships at 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Bucksport High School. Ellsworth and MDI will compete in the Large-School championships at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Old Town High School.
