Indoor track returns to UMaine as 2021-22 season beings

ORONO — After a year of staggered events in high school gymnasiums, the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League returned to the University of Maine over the weekend with meets held Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Ellsworth and Sumner competed in the first high school meet held in New Balance Field House since Feb. 8, 2020. Bucksport, Mount Desert Island and George Stevens Academy traveled to Orono on Saturday for the weekend’s second meet.

Ellsworth’s Drew Pierson (triple jump, 39-3; high jump, 5-8) and Sumner’s Kaleb Colson (800-meter run, 2:10.59; 1-mile run, 5:02.92) posted two event wins each in Friday’s boys’ meet. Jack Fisher added a win for the Tigers with a time of 12.20 seconds in the 60-yard hurdles.

In the girls’ portion of Saturday afternoon’s meet, Ellsworth’s Addison Nelson claimed first place in the 1-mile run with a time of 6:25.87. The Ellsworth girls’ team also got a victory from Amie Lupo in the 400-meter dash (1:16.02) and a win from Tori Watkins in the high jump (4-8).

On Saturday, GSA’s Ira Buchholz, Micah Bryan, Austin Chandler and Quinn Jackson won the boys’ 4-by-800 relay in 10:17.60. Bucksport’s William Hileman won the 800-meter and 1-mile runs in 2:17.60 and 4:56.62, respectively, and MDI got a win from Sophia Taylor in the girls’ 800-meter run (2:43.84) and a victory from Miles Burr in the boys’ 200-meter dash (24.04 seconds).

The Ellsworth boys and girls racked up 85.5 and 68 team points, respectively, to finish as runners-up to Brewer in Friday’s meet. The Bucksport boys scored 96 points Saturday to finish behind Bangor (110), and the MDI girls earned 53 to finish third to Bangor (181) and Old Town (76).

Local teams will return to UMaine on Thursday, Dec. 23. Ellsworth, MDI and Sumner will compete in the morning edition at 10, and Bucksport and GSA will compete in the afternoon meet at 2:30.
