ORONO — Two local teams earned runner-up honors over the weekend in the last meet of the indoor track regular season.
The Ellsworth boys and Bucksport girls placed second in their respective meets Saturday at the University of Maine’s New Balance Field House. The Eagles racked up 87 1/3 points to finish second to Bangor (114) in the morning session, and the Bucksport girls racked up 77 points to finish behind Brewer (95 1/2) in the afternoon.
For the Ellsworth boys, Aaron Lynch won the morning 55-meter dash as he posted a time of 7.06 seconds in the finals, and Drew Pierson (37 feet, 9 1/2 inches) won the triple jump for the Eagles. Addison Nelson (800-meter run, 2:38.00) and Tori Watkins (high jump, 4-8) added wins for the Ellsworth girls, and Thea Crowley won the 2-mile run (11:20.16) for George Stevens Academy.
For the Bucksport girls, the four-person team of Natasha Monreal, Ashley Cyr, Angelina Cotoni and Alyx Frazell won the 4-by-200 relay with a time of 2:01.34. Rebekah Ireland earned an individual win for the Golden Bucks as she crossed the finish line in 13:15.42 to take first place in the 2-mile run.
Elsewhere in the afternoon meet, Amelia VanDongen (800-meter run, 2:23.17; triple jump, 32-2 1/2) and Delaney Sweeney (pole vault, 8-0) claimed wins for the Mount Desert Island girls. MDI’s Miles Burr (55-meter dash, 6.75; 200-meter dash, 23.53) and Bucksport’s William Hileman (2-mile run, 10:18.78) added wins for their respective boys’ teams.
Qualified athletes will return to UMaine to compete in the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League championships this weekend. The EMITL Small-School championships will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, and the Large-School championships will be held Saturday, Feb. 12.
