Ellsworth’s Curts, Looker are state track champions

LEWISTON — Dan Curts won two titles and Aleta Looker one for the Ellsworth Eagles at Monday’s State Class B Indoor Track Championships at Bates College.

In the boys’ meet, York scored 76 points to take top honors. Ellsworth was fifth with 30, the Mount Desert Trojans were ninth with 21 and the Sumner Tigers were 24th with 2 in the field of 27 teams.

In the mile run, Curts, a junior, nipped junior Ben Trapani of Camden Hills by just seven hundredths of a point with his time of 4:39.80.

In the two-mile run, Curts finished more than three seconds ahead of runner-up Ben Decker of Yarmouth with a winning time of 9:55.87.

Other scoring in the boys’ meet:

Four-by-880-yard relay – Frank King, Robert Looker, Nate Rockwood and Curts of Ellsworth, fifth in 8:56.60; Jordan Harris, Aidan Robichaud-Ward, Will Richard and Max Mason of MDI, sixth in 8;56.86.

55-meter dash – Brandon Murphy of MDI, seventh in 6.97 seconds.

Mile run – Robichaud-Ward, seventh in 4:56.48.

200-meter dash – Murphy, fifth in 24.12 seconds; Kyle Jordan of Sumner, seventh in 24.43.

Two-mile run – Looker, fifth in 10:22.34.

Four-by-200-meter relay – Murphy, Mason, Ralph Magnani and Richard of MDI, third in 1:38.00; Baramee Janla, Brandon Wade, Zac Wells and Jordan of Sumner, seventh in 1:39.44.

Shot put – Trevor Alley of MDI, second at 46 feet, 3.75 inches; Dan Cox of Ellsworth, fourth at 44 feet, 5.5 inches.

Waterville was the winner in the girls’ meet with 112 points. Ellsworth placed fifth with 27 and MDI was sixth with 20 in the field of 27 teams.

Ellsworth’s Looker, a junior, nipped double winner Bethanie Brown of Waterville by less than a second to win the 800-meter run in 2:18.96 with Brown finishing in 2:19.30.

The MDI foursome of sophomores Caroline Driscoll, Emma Fernald and Kayla Ray and junior Nora Hubbell won the four-by-800-meter relay by the slimmest of margins with their time of 10:21.65, edging a Greely foursome by just 17-hundredths of a second.

In other scoring:

Four-by-800-meter relay – Mariah Brown, Haley Lawrence, Kira Kennedy and Looker of Ellsworth, fourth in 10:42.93.

Mile run – Looker, third in 5:23.24.

400-meter dash – Ray, sixth in 1:04.67.

800-meter run – Hubbell, fourth in 2:28.092.

Two-mile run – Lawrence, fifth in 12:07.69.

Shot put – Tori Huntley of Ellsworth, fourth at 31 feet, 7 inches.
