ORONO — The Ellsworth boys’ indoor track team enjoyed a successful day Saturday at the University of Maine as it finished just one point shy of a first-place finish in the afternoon meet.
Tulas Weaver earned two first-place finishes for Ellsworth with times of 6.91 seconds and 24.37 seconds in the 55- and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Beck Deeny also had a pair of individual event wins with first-place finishes in the long jump (19 feet, 11 1/4 inches) and triple jump (41 feet, 7 1/4 inches).
In the 55-meter hurdles, Henry Scheff crossed the finish line in 8.40 seconds to beat teammate Jack Sandone by nine-tenths of a second. Deeny, Sandone, Weaver and Mike Kazmierczak took first for Ellsworth in the 4-by-200 relay with a time of 1:39.92. The Eagles finished with 124 points, one behind Hampden Academy’s 125.
In the morning meet, Hancock County athletes swept the 800-meter run with Sumner’s Logan Carter (2:12.89) and George Stevens Academy’s Thea Crowley (2:42.99) earning event wins. Johanna Stiles (55- and 200-meter dashes), Addie Morrison (400-meter dash) and Victoria Watkins (high jump) earned runner-up finishes for the third-place Bucksport girls.
Local teams will be back at UMaine on Saturday, Feb. 1, for the seventh meet of the season. Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island, GSA and Sumner will compete in the morning meet at 9 a.m., and Bucksport will compete in the afternoon meet at 1:30 p.m.
