LEWISTON — The Mount Desert Island Trojan boys placed third in the State Class B Indoor Track Championships at Bates College on Saturday, with Ryan Bender capturing a pair of individual titles.
MDI’s speedy Bender won the 200-meter dash in 23 seconds flat and the 400-meter dash in 51.64 seconds, and was second in the 55-meter dash in 6.71 seconds.
Also claiming an individual championship was Johann Bradley of the Bucksport Golden Bucks, who won the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches.
York won the team competition with MDI placing third with 38 points, the George Stevens Academy Eagles 12th with 17 points and the Golden Bucks 18th with 10 points.
Other scorers for MDI were Croix Albee, third in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet; Evan Jeanotte, sixth in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 5.5 inches; Josh Bloom, seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:12.51; and Jose Chumbe, seventh in the long jump at 19 feet, 1.5 inches.
For GSA, John Hassett was runner-up in the mile run in 4:30.85 and fourth in the two-mile run in 10:06.68, and Cameron Gordon was fourth in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches
In the girls’ state Class B meet, MDI placed 11th with 15 points, Bucksport tied for 15th with 8 points, the Ellsworth Eagles scored 4 points and GSA had 2.
Bucksport’s Mavis Taungatu’a was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 8.75 inches.
Ashley Anderson had a strong performance for MDI, finishing runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.17 seconds, fourth in the 55-meter dash in 7.65 seconds and fifth in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.31.
For Ellsworth, Kia Osterlin was fifth in the mile run in 5:33.88 and teamed with Julia Zavaleta, Emma McKechnie and Courtney Wasson for seventh in the four-by-800-meter relay in 11:16.71.
For GSA, Zeya Lorio was sixth in the mile run in 5:34.81.
