Bucksport, GSA, MDI athletes claim titles at PVC outdoor track championships

BUCKSPORT — Athletes from three local high schools claimed  Penobscot Valley Conference titles this weekend at the Small-School championships in Bucksport and Large-School championships in Old Town.

For the Bucksport girls’ team, freshman Angelina Cotoni finished with a time of 17.14 seconds in Friday’s Small-School 100-meter hurdles to take home first place in the event. Cotoni also joined Addie Morrison, Britney Bussey and Johanna Stiles to give the Golden Bucks a first-place finish in the 4-by-100 relay.

On the boys’ side, senior Carter Tolmasoff earned 100- and 200-meter dash titles for Bucksport with times of 11.28 and 23.13 seconds, respectively. The Golden Bucks’ 4-by-100 team of Tolmasoff, Nate Sawyer, Jade Smith and Logan Stanley finished 0.04 seconds behind Orono to claim second place.

For George Stevens Academy, senior LeeAnn Varnum won the girls’ shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 5 inches. On the boys’ side, GSA got second-place efforts from Ian Howell (1,600-meter race walk), Ian Renwick (long jump) and its 4-by-800 relay team.

In Saturday’s Large-School meet, Mount Desert Island’s Marilyn Sawyer got an early event win with a time of 13.31 seconds in the 100-meter dash. Gilbert Isaacs won the shot put for the MDI boys with a distance of 52 feet, 1 3/4 inches.

Ellsworth and Sumner didn’t win individual titles at their respective meets, but athletes from both schools still put forth notable performances; Ellsworth got third-place efforts from Beck Deeny (boys’ triple jump) and Emma McKechnie (girls’ high jump), and Sumner got a sixth-place finish from Logan Carter (boys’ 1,600-meter run).

Qualified athletes are set to compete in the Class B and Class C championship meets, both of which begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1. The Class B meet will be held at Brewer High School, and the Class C meet will be held at Mount Blue High School in Farmington.
