Trenton’s Shelton brings home two titles at Angell Open

TRENTON — Trenton’s Elvi Shelton took home two tennis titles over the weekend when she won the ladies’ open singles and doubles tennis championships at the Angell Open in Portland.

In the singles competition, Shelton defeated 15-year-old Wells native Grace Campanella in straight sets. She teamed up with Sedgwick’s Ann Dentino to win the doubles competition final 7-5, 7-5.

Somerville, Mass., native Mesa Mei won the men’s singles title by beating Boston’s Jordi Muller 6-2, 6-1. In the men’s 55-plus division, Lewiston’s Ron Chicoine defeated Jeff Gearhart 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The tournament began Friday and ended Sunday. It was held in honor of the late Chris Angell, a Brooklin native who was formerly the top-ranked player in the state of Maine. Funds from the tournament went toward mental health awareness and advocacy groups.
