Tennis teams headed for playoffs as regular season nears conclusion May 22, 2018 on Sports, Tennis ELLSWORTH — The 2018 high school tennis regular season concludes this week, and several local teams are on course to participate in the playoffs. At 7-4, the Ellsworth boys’ team is currently in fifth place in Class B North. The girls’ team is 8-3 and holds sixth place in the standings. Elsewhere in Class B North, the Mount Desert Island girls’ team (4-7) is also likely to secure a playoff bid. The MDI boys and girls will take on Ellsworth 4 p.m. tomorrow, May 23, to conclude the regular season. In Class C North, the fourth-ranked George Stevens Academy boys’ team (5-6) will have a chance at its ninth consecutive regional title. The No. 2 GSA girls’ team (9-2) is also looking to defend its Northern Maine crown and will receive a bye to the quarterfinals. The Deer Isle-Stonington boys’ and girls’ teams will also be participating in the Class C North playoffs. The boys’ team (5-6) split with Calais on Tuesday, and the girls (4-7) lost both games. The Mariners are set to finish the regular season against GSA at 4 p.m. tomorrow, May 23. The preliminary round of the playoffs is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 29. Playoff matches will continue throughout the week with the regional quarterfinals beginning next Thursday, May 31, and the semifinals starting June 2. Regional and state champions are set to be crowned June 7 and June 9, respectively. The Ellsworth American will post a full schedule of playoff times and dates online once seedings are announced.
