BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island High School girls tennis advanced in the playoffs with a win over the John Bapst Crusaders 4-1 on Wednesday.
“Besides that one hiccough in the second set for first doubles, everybody really played great,” said Coach Rowell.
Trojan Christie put her match to bed first with a 6-0, 6-1 win over John Bapst’s Rebecca Settele.
“I thought Julia’s match would be a tough one to win because that John Bapst girl is so consistent and keeps the ball in play all of the time,” Coach Rowell said. “It was competitive for two or three games but then Julia stepped it up to the next level like she is capable of doing. She could be a singles player for a lot of other teams.”
The doubles team of Sampson and Worcester then set a commanding pace in the first set, winning 6-0. The Trojan duo stumbled and dropped the second set 2-6 before shutting the Crusaders out 6-0 in the finals set to take their match.
“They have been the backbone of the team,” said Coach Rowell. If they had been playing together all season they might have taken the PVCs.”
Swanson posted a win for MDI in the second doubles slot beating John Bapst’s Paulie Bickford confidently 6-3, 6-0.
“It was really a good match they were both hitting the ball really hard, not just blooping it over,” said Coach Rowell. “Then she just cruised in the second set. That was great for her confidence level.”
Brown and Musetti notched a Trojan victory with a win over the Crusader duo of Erin Bousfield and Jacquelyn Dougherty. MDI won the first set fairly handily 6-1. In the second set the Trojans battled from a 3-2 deficit to get the 6-4 win.
In first singles, Crusader Jordan Myerowitz battled with MDI’s Robbins. Myerowitz nearly swept the first set winning 6-1. Robbins fought back and took a 6-4 win in set two. Myerowitz settled the matter in the third set earning a 6-4 win.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match but I have been saying to my girls the whole time that they are a great team and they can compete with anybody,” said Coach Rowell. “After that match they believe it. They have been giving us fits all season.”
The girls’ tennis team experienced stellar success this season, ending the regular season with a record of 11-1.
Grace Robbins was the lone MDI player to make the round of 48 singles tournament. “Grace making it to the round of 48 is a great accomplishment. I think she is one of the best but it was a matter of getting her to believe it,” Coach Rowell said. “I thought she would be our number-one going into the season and she proved me right by playing great all season long.”
As a whole, the girl singles players exceeded Coach Rowell’s expectations. “We held our own at singles. I thought we would be stronger in doubles like we have in the past,” said Coach Rowell. “We won a lot of matches because we won two out of three to three out of three singles matches. That was quite a surprise for me. All three of them were leaders on and off the court.”
