SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The team sponsored by Jasper Wyman & Son captured the 7th annual EdGE Open Tennis Tournament at the Causeway Club on Friday.

In a close battle, the Wyman team defeated the Small Animal Clinic team by just two games, 17-15, in the championship finals.

This annual tennis tournament supports the EdGE program of the Maine Sea Coast Mission.

The two teams were evenly matched as the Jasper Wyman men’s advanced duo of Dennis Kiley and Jaime Weir tied the Small Animal Clinic duo of Ben Beverly and Bob Pooler 4-4.

The intermediate Wyman duo of Jim Murasko and Jeff Toothaker and the Small Animal Clinic duo of Alec Toothaker and Dillon Toothaker also played to a 4-4 tie.

The Small Animal Clinic advanced women’s duo of Julie Hammer and Lisa Smith bested the Wyman duo of Donna Crawford and Ginny Dalrymple 5-3.

But the Wyman intermediate women’s duo of Patti Haslam and Karen Robidoux downed the Small Animal Clinic duo of Sue Loustaurau and Rose Toothaker 6-2.

The other semifinalists were teams sponsored by Machias Business Group and Stanley Subaru.

Machias Business Group lost to ultimate champion Jasper Wyman & Son 18-14 and Stanley Subaru lost to Small Animal Clinic 19-13.

Teams sponsored by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, Dead River Co., Machias Savings Bank and R.H. Foster also provided close matches in the daylong competition.

The Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor again donated the use of its courts for the event.

“All 64 players had fun playing in this tournament for the benefit of the Maine Sea Coast Mission’s EdGE program which is so important for the lives of many children in eastern Maine,” said Larry Hudgens, tournament director.

The EdGE provides after school and summer programs for about 500 children in 17 Downeast Maine communities.

Tournament sponsors and players are drawn from throughout eastern Maine, including the Bangor area, Machias, Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island and other communities.

Hannaford, The Somesville Subway and Dead River Convenience Store donated a variety of food and beverages in support of this event.
