High school tennis prelims set to begin Tuesday



ELLSWORTH — The high school tennis playoffs are scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 29, as teams from three local schools will be participating in the Class B and Class C preliminary rounds.

At 4:30 p.m., the fifth-seeded Ellsworth boys’ team (7-5) will host No. 12 Mount Desert Island (5-7). The encounter will be a rematch of Thursday’s contest between the teams, which MDI won 3-2.

On the girls’ side, No. 5 Ellsworth (9-3) will host No. 12 Oceanside (4-8) at 2 p.m. No. 11 MDI (4-8) will play on the road against Erskine Academy (9-4) at 4 p.m.

In Class C North play, the seventh-ranked Deer Isle-Stonington boys (5-7) will take on No. 10 Calais (7-5) at 4 p.m. The No. 9 Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ team (4-8) is set to battle No. 8 Calais (10-2) at that time on the road.

The No. 2 George Stevens Academy girls (10-2) and No. 3 boys (6-6) have byes to the Class C North quarterfinals. The girls’ team will play the winner of seventh-ranked Houlton (6-6) and No. 10 Van Buren (6-4), and the boys will take on No. 6 Stearns/Schenck (7-5) or No. 11 Lee Academy (4-8).

The Ellsworth American will have times and dates for regional quarterfinal contests once matchups have been announced.
