BLUE HILL — The George Stevens Academy boys’ and girls’ tennis teams lost Tuesday in their respective Class C North championship matches at Bates College in Lewiston.
On the boys’ side, GSA fell to a 4-1 defeat against top-ranked Orono (14-1). The doubles duo of Joey Mitchell and Liam Webb gave the Eagles their lone win on the day with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over the Red Riots’ Alex Brown and Sam Henderson.
GSA’s girls’ team (12-3) played No. 1 Mattanawcook Academy (15-0) and fell just short of upsetting the defending state champion Lynx. The No. 2 Eagles used a singles win from Chloe Politte and a doubles victory from Libby Weed and Hattie Slayton to make the second singles match the decider, and Mattanawcook claimed a tiebreaker win to repeat as the Class C North champion.
The losses came after both GSA teams pulled off impressive quarterfinal and semifinal wins to reach Tuesday’s regional finals. The girls advanced to the title match with 5-0 wins over No. 7 Van Buren (8-3) and No. 6 Piscataquis (10-5), and the boys beat sixth-ranked Houlton (8-7) 5-0 before upsetting No. 2 Mattanawcook (11-3) 3-2 in the semifinals.
State title matches for all three classes will be held Saturday, June 8, at Lewiston High School. Class C matches will begin at 9:15 a.m. with Class B (12:45 p.m.) and Class A (4:15 p.m.) to follow.
