GSA girls’ tennis team improves to 8-1



BLUE HILL — The George Stevens Academy girls’ tennis team defeated Orono last Wednesday and topped Piscataquis on Monday to earn its sixth straight win and extend its record to 8-1 on the season.

On the road against Orono, GSA used a strong performance in doubles play to earn a 3-2 win. Chloe Politte and Libby Weed defeated Orono’s Leah Costello and Grace Lee, and Yulia Heggestad and Katie Schweizer beat Sophia Silwal and Izzy Baker. Sophomore Julianna Allen beat Becca Gallandt to give the first-place Eagles their lone singles win on the day.

Against Piscataquis, the Eagles rolled to a 5-0 victory with singles wins from Allen, Courtney Bianco and Lindsay Nevin. The duos of Politte and Weed and Elinor Haldane and Erika Hipsky earned doubles victories for the visitors as GSA outscored Piscataquis by a combined 40-8 to come away with the win in Guilford.

GSA is scheduled to face MDI (3-5) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 16. The team will host second-ranked Mattanawcook Academy at 4 p.m. next Monday, May 21, before finishing off the regular season at home against Deer Isle-Stonington at that time May 23.
