GSA boys win regional tennis crown; EHS girls fall in semis

ELLSWORTH — One Hancock County tennis team claimed a regional title Tuesday as another saw a memorable season end in the weekend’s semifinals.

The George Stevens Academy boys’ team claimed the Class C North crown with a victory over Van Buren in Tuesday’s regional final at Schenck High School. The Ellsworth girls’ team fell to Waterville in Saturday’s Class B North semifinals, but not before the team claimed one last playoff win.

The top-ranked GSA boys defeated No. 3 Van Buren (8-1) 4-1 in Tuesday’s showdown in East Millinocket. The win was the sixth in a row for the 14-1 Eagles, who had defeated eighth-ranked Fort Kent 4-1 in Friday’s quarterfinal match and No. 5 Mattanawcook Academy 4-0 in Saturday’s semis.

Wins from Robbie Bennett (No. 1 singles; 6-2, 6-4), Oliver Lardner (No. 2 singles; 4-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Elias Lieser (6-3, 6-4) gave GSA a 3-0 day in singles play. Theo Lesko and Tony Politano claimed a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory for the Eagles in second doubles.

In girls’ play, Ellsworth claimed a 4-1 victory in Thursday’s home quarterfinal match against No. 13 Old Town (4-10). The Eagles got singles wins from Sierra Andrews (No. 2; 6-0, 6-0) and Megan Jordan (No. 3; 6-1, 6-1) and doubles wins from Jocelyn Boudreau and Grace Gumpp (No. 1; 6-4, 6-4) and Briana Kane and Kahlan Keene (No. 2; 4-6, 7-6, 6-4).

Fifth-ranked Ellsworth’s season came to an end Saturday with a 5-0 loss to perennial powerhouse Waterville (14-0) in the semifinals. The Eagles’ concluded the year 12-3 with the loss to the top-ranked Panthers.

The GSA boys will compete for the state title at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Lewiston High School. The Eagles will face the winner of tomorrow’s Class C South final between top-ranked Waynflete (12-1) and No. 2 Winthrop/Maranacook.
