BANGOR — Two Ellsworth tennis players qualified over the weekend for the state singles tennis tournament to be played later this month.
Koa Barrett and Ben Osterlin of the Ellsworth boys’ team won all of their respective matches in Saturday’s qualifying round to move on to the upcoming Round of 32. The two were among hundreds participating in the Region 2 tournament, which took place at various facilities throughout the Bangor area.
Barrett opened qualifying play with an 8-4 play-in win over Orono’s Chris Cost-Kirkpatrick and followed it with a victory by the same score over Brewer’s Brendan Saunders. He then defeated Foxcroft’s Karem Bekmez by default in the day’s final match to book his place in the next round.
Osterlin breezed to victory in his opening match as he defeated Schenck/Stearns’ Gabe Benson 8-2. The senior then topped Orono’s Tommy Owen in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) to give the Ellsworth boys’ team two participants in the next round of play.
Mount Desert Island’s Weston Granholm, Taber Allen and Lelia Weir also reached the Round of 32. Also participating were Ellsworth’s Bailey Clarke, Grace Gumpp, Megan Jordan, Kai Barrett and Tate Carter, MDI’s Austria Morehouse, Jack Hodgdon, Moses Lincoln and Finn Seyffer, George Stevens Academy’s Ellie McMillan, Robert Bennett, Oliver Lardner, Elias Lieser and Deer Isle-Stonington’s Emma Plummer, Dakota Emrick and Mason Woodman.
State singles tournament matches will be held next Friday, May 21, next Saturday, May 22 and the following Monday, May 24. All matches will be played at Lewiston High School.
