Ellsworth boys, girls advance to regional tennis quarterfinals



ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ tennis teams breezed to victories Tuesday in their respective opening-round Northern Maine tournament matches.

Ellsworth girls’ team began the day with a 4-1 victory over visiting Belfast (4-9). The boys’ team then made it two victories later in the afternoon with a 5-0 win over No. 12 Erskine Academy (5-8).

On the girls’ side, fifth-ranked Ellsworth (11-2) claimed singles victories from Sierra Andrews (No. 2) and Megan Jordan (No. 3). Andrews claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Belfast’s Jasmine Cunningham, and Jordan remained unbeaten on topped the Lions’ Ada Curry 6-1, 6-1 to remain unbeaten.

Ellsworth continued a year of strong play in girls’ doubles with victories over No. 12 Belfast in both matches. Jocelyn Boudreau and Grace Gumpp edged Josie Cowles and Taylor Lemon 7-5, 6-0 in No. 1 doubles, and Briana Kane and Kahlan Keene defeated Sarah Cournoyer and Liana Gobin 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 play.

The No. 5 Ellsworth boys’ team (10-3) started off the day with a win from Ben Osterlin, who claimed a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jack Blais in No. 1 singles. The Eagles also got singles wins from Liam Stephenson (6-4, 6-1 over Devon Polley in No. 2 play) and Tate Carter (6-0, 6-0 over Bobby McCafferty in No. 3 play).

Kai and Koa Barrett gave Ellsworth a win in No. 1 doubles play as they defeated Erskine’s Jacob Bentley and Cooper Grondin 6-0, 6-2. The Eagles’ Dallas Flood and Everett Huckins added a win in second doubles play with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Zephyr Lani-Caputo and Jon Pell.

The Ellsworth boys’ team will play on the road against fourth-ranked Medomak Valley (10-3) at 4 p.m. tomorrow, June 2. The girls’ team will host No. 13 Old Town (4-9) at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 3.
