Eight county players move on in tennis singles qualifier



ORONO — Five boys and three girls from Hancock County teams advanced to the next level in Tuesday’s Region 2 qualifier for Maine’s High School Tennis Singles Championships.

Moving on to the Round of 48 at Lewiston High School on Saturday, May 25, will be Evan Toothaker, Ben Haslam and Ina Maloney of the Ellsworth Eagles, Luke Horton and Madeline Cook of the Mount Desert Island Trojans and Johnny Xue, Alex Heilner and Charlotte Reiter of the George Stevens Academy Eagles.

In girls’ competition Tuesday at the University of Maine, Maloney defeated Aiesha Sargent of Orono 8-0 and Mackenzie Coiley of Foxcroft Academy 6-1, 6-0.

MDI’s Cook downed Kelly Martin of Hampden 8-1 and bested Olivia Mora of Ellsworth 7-5, 6-1.

GSA’s Reiter advanced with a walkover against Allie Stanley of MDI and blanked Aleisha Sides of Penobscot Valley 6-0, 6-0.

On the boys’ side, Ellsworth’s Toothaker bested Justin Chan of Mattanawcook Academy 8-0, then got off to a slow start before defeating Ian Burgess of Brewer 0-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Haslam downed Ben Smith of Old Town 8-5 and dispatched Spencer Fitzgerald of Dexter 6-1, 6-0.

MDI’s Horton knocked off Zicong Ding of John Bapst 8-3 and defeated Tate Yoder of the GSA Eagles 6-1, 7-5.

For GSA, Xue blanked Kanphong Suvarnnapichaya of Maine Central Institute 8-0 and rolled over Sam Jordan of Hampden 6-0, 6-0.

Heilner topped Braden Wentworth of the Sumner Tigers 8-1 and advanced with a walkover against Bangor’s Josh Audibert in the final.
