ELLSWORTH — The high school tennis playoffs began Tuesday with teams from three local schools participating in the Class B and Class C North preliminary rounds.
In Class B North action, the fifth-ranked Ellsworth boys (8-5) defeated No. 12 Mount Desert Island (5-8) 4-1. The win gave the Eagles revenge for a 3-2 loss to MDI in the regular season finale last week and sent the team to a quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 Belfast (9-3) at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 31.
On the girls’ side, No. 12 Oceanside upset fifth-ranked Ellsworth 3-2. The No. 11 MDI girls (4-9) also saw their season come to an end with a 5-0 loss against No. 6 Erskine Academy.
In Class C North play, the seventh-ranked Deer Isle-Stonington boys (6-7) beat No. 10 Calais (7-6) 3-2 to advance to the quarterfinals against No. 2 Orono (8-4). The No. 9 Deer Isle-Stonington girls’ team fell to No. 8 Calais (11-2) 3-2 on the road.
Also in Class C North, the No. 2 George Stevens Academy girls (10-2) and No. 3 boys (6-6) earned byes to the Class C North quarterfinals. The girls’ team will take on the winner of seventh-ranked Houlton (6-6) and No. 10 Van Buren (6-4) at 4 p.m. tomorrow, May 30, and the boys will take on No. 6 Stearns/Schenck (8-5) at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Several local players also competed at the state singles tournament Friday. Ellsworth’s Miriam Nelson and Norman Jodrey, MDI’s Drake Janes and Ellie Bridgers and GSA’s Kaito Fang and Lindsay Nevin all made the top 48 with Nelson, Bridgers and Fang advancing to the round of 32.
Times and dates for the semifinal matches will be announced once the quarterfinals have concluded.
