ELLSWORTH — Last Friday at the Maine Racket and Fitness Center in Portland, four of the five Hancock County players advancing to the Maine Singles Championships were eliminated in the early going.
On the girls’ side, Chelsea Ciomei of the DI-Stonington Mariners bested Maci Monson of Hampden Academy 6-7 (7-3), 6-4, 6-0 in the first round, but fell to eighth-seeded Analise Kump of Falmouth 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
Miranda Grant of the Ellsworth Eagles gave Natalie Egbert of Gorham a tough battle before falling in a third set tiebreaker in second round play.
Grant won the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-0 and matched Egbert game for game in the third set before falling 7-6 (7-4).
In first round play on the boys’ side, Josh Dennison of Mount Ararat downed Alexander Keefe of Ellsworth 6-2, 6-3, and Guy Jenkins of Lisbon bested Noah Bracken of the Mount Desert Island Trojans 6-3, 7-5.
In the second round, Nick Tolman of Scarborough downed Spencer Small of Ellsworth 6-4, 6-0.
Bobtom Flynn of Hancock, who plays for the John Bapst Crusaders in Bangor, defeated Shane Belanger of Caribou 6-4, 6-1 in second round play but fell to eighth-seeded Mike Hickey of Yarmouth 6-4, 6-2 in Saturday’s round of 16.
In the Penobscot Valley Conference doubles tournament on Saturday, it was a double win for Ellsworth.
Dillon Toothaker and Tyler Small downed Max Reiter and Forrest Barkdoll-Weil of GSA 6-3, 6-4 in boys’ action.
On the girls’ side, Holly Wadman and Caitlin Maloney bested Hannah Worcester and Hannah Adelmann of the MDI Trojans 8-4.
