MDI girls swim team tops at State meet

The Mount Desert Island High School Girls Swim Team celebrates in the pool after winning the Class B state championship on Tuesday evenings.

ORONO — The Mount Desert Island High School girls’ swimming team was crowned the fastest in Class B Tuesday night after narrowly outpacing Greely High School in the Maine State Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Lady Trojans won the meet by slightly more than 15 points (or just one fourth-place finish) ahead of second-placed Greely. The final score was MDI 295.5 to Greely’s 280.

On Monday, the MDI boys finished second to Greely in that state meet. (See results below). The MDI girls finished second to Greely last year in the state final. The Trojan girls took first place over Greely at the states in 2011.

“It was basically just a solid effort,” said head MDI coach Tony DeMuro, after plunging into the pool with his team dressed in the towel he wore as a cape for duration of the meet.

“There are a few girls who have just ended their high school careers and a just a lot of effort,” he said. “Now, we are going to KFC in Brewer to show off our trophy.”
