Ellsworth swim sweeps GSA to open 2021-22 season



ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth boys’ and girls’ swim teams opened the 2021-22 season with victories in Friday’s meet against George Stevens Academy at the Down East Family YMCA.

Ellsworth dominated the home meet with wins in all 11 boys’ events and all 11 girls’ events. The Eagles won the boys’ competition 91-22 on the boys’ side and prevailed 119-22 on the girls’ side.

The Ellsworth girls’ team opened the meet with a win by Sydney Libby, Kristy Barry, Ella Montgomery and Jordan Berry in the 200-yard medley relay (2 minutes, 6.81 seconds). Berry, Libby, Barry and Kiera Springer won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:53.71, and Montgomery, Leah MacPherson, Adriana Richardson and Brynn Stephenson won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:26.63.

Montgomery (200 individual medley, 2:25.72; 100 freestyle, 58.77), Mazgaj (100 butterfly, 1:04.55; 50 freestyle, 27.40) and Barry (100 breaststroke, 1:15.92; 500 freestyle, 5:39.62) claimed two individual wins each for Ellsworth. MacPherson won the 100 backstroke in 1:10.77) and Springer won the 200 freestyle in 2:10.17.

On the boys’ side, Ellsworth’s Andy Erlanson, Felix Markosian, Lucas Fendl and Kobe Swett won the 200 medley relay in 1:58.88. Erlanson, Swett, Noah DiDonato and Robert Springer won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:58.73, and Springer, Markosian, DiDonato and Fendl won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:31.36.

Fendl (50 freestyle, 24.92; 100 butterfly, 58.83), Erlanson (200 IM, 2:34.67; 100 backstroke, 1:11.38) and Springer (200 freestyle, 2:05.49; 500 freestyle, 5:36.55) each won a pair of individual events for the Ellsworth boys. Markosian (100 breaststroke, 1:15.42) and Swett (100 freestyle, 1:02.00) also added solo wins.

Blake Nason (50 freestyle, 30.75) and Clark Morrison (100 backstroke, 1:14.20) earned second-place finishes for the GSA boys, and Fiona Allen finished the 100 butterfly in 1:17.94 to place second for the GSA girls. GSA’s boys’ 200 freestyle relay team of Morrison, Aiden Howe, Zane Bulger, Jack Sullivan placed second with a time of 2:18.24.

Ellsworth will be back at home for another meet at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, against Hampden Academy.
